Volunteer Hours Tracking

I am interested in tracking the hours that are volunteer and service learning groups put in each semester. I have some samples that Joe gave me, but I want to know how it works at your campus.

So, how do you track hours?

How do you get them to submit their hours to you? What kind of incentives do you offer?

Any help would be appreciated!

1/2 day workshop

As part of my strengthening partnerships part of my VAD I have to create some sort of half day workshop next semester that deals with Internships, Volunteerism and Service-Learning. I have all these ideas of things I could do at a workshop but I'm not sure if they are appropriate or not. I have never run a workshop so I do have questions for anyone that has run one.

For example. do I have to stand up there and give a power point demonstration the whole time? Can I have guest speakers? Can ...

Handbook Organization and Ideas

I'm working on creating a handbook directed at community agencies about how to establish a partnership with the college and what options they have, etc.

I've been told not to try to reinvent the wheel so I've found a few handbook examples and with their help I've been able to take ideas and create a pretty decent outline of the handbook thus far. Even though it doesn't look too shabby right now I was wonder if any of you had any handbook resources available to you that could look into? I'm ...

Assessment

At our student affairs retreat today I learned about 2 assessment tools which looked excellent for NYCC-VISTA work. Comprehensive assessment can be often very complicated, but these tools seemed to make things easier, and if implemented, you would gain access to a support structure and not have to start from scratch.

First was the student voice system which is an assessment tool utilized for everything from campus-wide strategic planning to tracking activities in one area. Currently it is ...

Any ideas for recruiting volunteers for nursing homes?

Part of my VAD is increasing volunteers at some of the local nursing homes. Since I have been relegated to working with student organizations, rather than individual students, it has been difficult finding groups who want to volunteer there. There is one sorority that already has an established relationship with one of the local homes, but they were doing this without me and have yet to respond to any of my e-mails. A few representatives of other organizations expressed interest in doing activities ...

Acknowledging Facultys' S-L Work

As I meet with faculty to get a feel for S-L on campus, I find that they can all agree on one thing. Most all faculty members I meet with feel that their work with S-L is not acknowledged. Service-learning is not included in the tenure track (if that's how you word it), nor is it really recognized on campus. There's me, offering my support, but the college as a whole does not recognize these efforts.

The one way we DO actually recognize faculty and their service-learning efforts are ...

Make sure you are up-to-date and fresh on your information.

Use your supervisor's name and department when meeting with faculty and staff.

I've found it to be useful if you check the "climate" of your office (The politics, the little things, etc) before you make decisions on many things.

Many people do things because others (or specific "others") are doing things.

Many people like having information and numbers and data.

Many people like personal stories.

There are myriad ways that people do things. Sometimes you need to find what motivates others.

It can be very simple. In navigating higher ...

First of all, deciding on a name is basic yet vital. Depending on your campus culture and already existent committees (of sorts), the lexicon you use may foster or thwart participation.

Words like: Committee, Board, Advisory, Working, Council, etc... are used interchangeably and in correlation with each other. Some may denote higher levels of involvement and commitment. Choose wisely...

*Also, just for the record... It has been debated for years, and will probably still be challenged, ...
